Our Values
The process of creating the school’s five core values was a collaborative journey that involved the whole school community. Pupils, governors, staff, and parents were each given the opportunity to contribute their ideas about what they felt the school’s values should be, ensuring that a wide range of voices and perspectives were heard. From this collective input, a shortlist was drawn up and carefully refined into five key values that best reflected the aspirations and ethos of the school. Once agreed, staff worked together to bring these values to life by expanding on what each one means in practice. For every value, they defined what we do, what we show, what we promote, and the culture we create, ensuring the values were not just words on paper but guiding principles that shape behaviour, teaching, and the school environment every day.
Resilience – Encouraging children to persevere through challenges and bounce back from setbacks.
Independence – Supporting pupils to think and act for themselves as confident learners.
Empathy – Fostering kindness, understanding, and emotional intelligence in relationships.
Ambition – Inspiring all children to aim high and believe in their potential.
Respect – Building a community where everyone feels valued and differences are honoured.
Do, Show, Promote, Create
🌟 Resilience
What we do:
Teach children strategies to manage setbacks and encourage positive risk-taking.
Use restorative practices and growth mindset language in feedback.
Celebrate effort, persistence, and problem-solving, not just final outcomes.
What we show:
Adults model resilience through language, behaviour, and response to challenges.
Classrooms display examples of perseverance, such as “learning journeys” and improvement over time.
Children are encouraged to “have another go” and reflect on what they learned from failure.
What we promote:
Use of reflection in pupil feedback or "learning from mistakes" e.g editing work in different colour
Use of effort ladders for pupils to reflect
Recognition assemblies that celebrate effort, not just achievement.
Stories, texts, and curriculum examples featuring resilient characters or real-life people.
Culture we create:
A safe, encouraging environment where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities and effort is always recognised. Children believe that with practice and support, they can improve and overcome difficulties.
🌟 Independence
What we do:
Scaffold learning tasks that gradually encourage children to take more ownership.
Provide opportunities for self-directed learning, including through inquiry-based approaches.
Involve pupils in decision-making and give choices in learning and school life.
What we show:
Children organising their own resources, managing transitions, and setting personal goals.
Staff trusting children to lead, present, and take responsibility in class and across the school.
Use of visual timetables and checklists to build confidence in managing tasks.
What we promote:
Independent problem-solving and thinking in all areas of the curriculum.
Pupil voice initiatives such as school council, eco teams, or peer mentoring.
Growth in personal responsibility, including self-assessment and goal setting.
Culture we create:
A culture where children are empowered and trusted. They feel confident to try things by themselves and take responsibility for their learning, behaviour, and actions.
🌟 Empathy
What we do:
Explicitly teach emotional literacy and perspective-taking through PSHE and circle time.
Encourage active listening and model compassionate responses.
Use role play, storytelling, and discussion to explore feelings and social situations.
What we show:
Staff and pupils treating each other with kindness, patience, and understanding.
Children supporting one another in and out of the classroom.
Behaviour policies that prioritise understanding the “why” behind actions and support over consequence.
What we promote:
Anti-bullying campaigns, inclusion weeks, and peer support schemes.
Reflection and restorative conversations after conflicts.
Celebrations of cultural, social, and individual differences.
Culture we create:
A warm, inclusive environment where everyone feels heard, seen, and supported. Children learn to care about others and act with compassion in their daily interactions.
🌟 Ambition
What we do:
Set high expectations and aspirations for all pupils regardless of background.
Share success stories and pathways to achievement.
Challenge pupils to stretch themselves and explore their potential.
What we show:
Teachers demonstrating belief in every child’s ability to succeed.
Displays of aspirational work and achievements
Use of language that reinforces potential, growth, and self-belief.
What we promote:
Opportunities for all pupils to shine – from academic to creative to sporting.
Ambition not just for themselves, but for their school and wider community.
Staff who are continuously learning and modelling lifelong ambition.
Culture we create:
A school where dreams are nurtured and achievement is celebrated. Children believe that “anything is possible” and are encouraged to set their sights high and work towards their goals with support and determination.
🌟 Respect
What we do:
Embed clear expectations for respectful behaviour, language, and interactions.
Teach about rights, responsibilities, and the importance of diversity.
Ensure policies and practices reflect fairness and equity.
What we show:
Adults modelling respect in how they speak to and about pupils, families, and each other.
Calm, orderly environments where everyone feels safe and valued.
Respectful listening, turn-taking, and appreciation of different views.
What we promote:
Celebration of different cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds.
Use of restorative conversations to address disrespect.
Inclusion of respect as a theme in assemblies, displays, and curriculum content.
Culture we create:
A school where every individual feels valued, heard, and treated with dignity. Respect underpins all relationships — between children, staff, and families — and sets the tone for learning and growth.
